A couple who has the flu

Getting a flu shot each year is almost always a good idea, but it’s not a guarantee that you won’t get sick. And while your oral health is probably the last thing on your mind when you have the flu, you might be surprised at how poor oral health or hygiene can affect how you feel. Not to mentiont that bacteria and the flu virus can actually spread to your teeth and gums. And even though cold and flu remedies can relieve your symptoms, they often have unanticipated consequences for your dental health. Below, you’ll find 5 flu season health tips you can use to feel better fast and maintain a healthy smile at the same time.

1. Drink the Right Fluids

It may be tempting to reach for orange juice for vitamin C or sweetened sports drinks for electrolytes, but there are better, sugar-free ways to get these beneficial ingredients. For vitamin C, take supplements or eat whole fruit. If your electrolytes are depleted, add a pinch of sea salt to a glass of water with a bit of lemon juice, or choose a sugar-free sports drink. Also, make sure you’re drinking plenty of plain water, which will keep you hydrated without increasing your risk of cavities.

2. Gargle With Salt Water

Salt is great for killing bacteria and viruses. And since you already have it in your kitchen, it’s easy and inexpensive. Just add ¼ to ½ teaspoon of salt to a glass of lukewarm water and gargle several times a day. It works by killing the “flu bugs” in your mouth and the back of your throat and can significantly reduce the length and severity of your illness. It’s also a great way to soothe a sore throat.

3. Reach For Sugar-Free Flu Remedies

Sweetened cough drops and cough syrup can really do a number on your teeth. Cough drops can be just as harmful as hard candy and, since cough syrup is sticky, it adheres to your teeth. When using these products, reduce your risk of tooth decay by choosing a sugar-free variety.

4. Try To Maintain Good Oral Hygiene Habits

When you’re really sick, you may not have the energy for brushing and flossing. But keep in mind that even less-than-perfect oral hygiene habits are still beneficial (e.g. if you can only brush once a day, your teeth and gums will stay healthier than not brushing at all). You may also find it helpful to swish with fluoride (anti-cavity) mouthwash once or twice a day. While not a subsitute for brushing, it will help to strengthen your enamel and prevent cavities.

5. Get a Checkup and Cleaning After You’ve Recovered

When you feel better, schedule a checkup and cleaning with a dentist. Your teeth will not only feel great after being cleaned and polished, but you’ll have peace of mind from knowing that everything is in good shape.

Everyone does their best to avoid catching the flu. But if you come down with it anyway, you can use these tips to feel better fast, without putting your smile at risk.
