Whether you have lost one tooth or several teeth, dental
implants are usually the best option, as they replace not only the crown, or
the top part of the tooth, but the root as well. Replacing the root helps prevent
your jawbone from shrinking, which keeps your face looking young. Implants also
help keep gum disease at bay, because they fill the gaps in the mouth where
infection is likely to occur.

What Are the 2 Types of Dental Implants?

The two kinds of dental implants are:

Endosteal: These implants are shaped like
screws and are placed directly into the jawbone through surgery. They are the
most common kind of implant, and can be used to support a crown, bridge, or
dentures.

Subperiosteal: These are placed on top of
the jaw with metal posts that come through the gums to hold a restoration. If
you are unable to wear traditional dentures, then subperiosteal implants may be
right for you.

Are Dental Implants Right for Me?

You would be an ideal candidate for dental implants if you:

Don’t smoke or chew tobacco

Have enough healthy jawbone tissue, or can
undergo a bone graft

Don’t have diabetes

Don’t have any diseases that compromise the
immune system

Have excellent general and oral health

Are willing to dedicate months to the healing
process

If you’re sick of having gaps in your smile, contact your
local implant dentist to see if implants would be a good option for you.

About the Author

Dr. Jon Davidson enjoys meeting
and forming relationships with patients at Dental Dynamics in Skokie, IL.
